Exam Review

Here are some trig questions that we did today.

Question: You are a passenger on a train that is travelling west through the Rocky Mountains.  At one point you notice a mountain directly to the north of you (bearing of 0°) with its peak at an angle of elevation of 42°.  After the train moves for 800m, the mountain is at a bearing of 30°.  How tall is the mountain?

Question: A rock concert takes place on a circular stage where the audience can stand around and watch from all directions.  The main platform of the stage is 3m above the audience.  The lead singer sees her ex-husband due South at an angle of depression of 36°.  Her son is at a S50°E and an angle of depression of 24° degrees.  Has the ex-husband violated his 100m restraining order from the son?

Jan. 8 Class

Today we discussed what happens when you invest money incrementally (ie. monthly, weekly or annually, etc.), this is called an annuity.  Since the amount in the bank changes, the interest will also change.  The result is a geometric sum and the formula is different from that of compound interest.
