Sept. 5, First Day of Class!

  1. Understand the expectations for the course.
  2. Review essential skills: working with polynomials & factoring

We covered a lot of material today.  Here are some important handouts:

We then discussed what it Looks Like, Sounds Like and Feels Like in an ideal classroom.  We came up with a few ideas:

What does an ideal Look Like?
- Teacher, desk, students, neat, organized
- responsible use of technology

Sound like?
- Quiet, group work + discussion.
- talk about math "cosine law…"
- no cell phones going off.

Feel like?
- respectful: attention to person talking
- completion of work
- feel equal
- no put down

These ideas sounds great to me!  We will continue to add to these items as the course goes on.

I then handed out a few sheets of review problems for homework.  Unfortunately I do not have digital copies of these handouts at the moment, but will post them once I get a chance to scan them.

After all the paper work and important information about the course, we began on some review of essential skills that you will need to do well in this course.

We discussed expanding and simplifying polynomials:

Example on how to expand and simplify.

As well as review of factoring by common factor and group:

Example of factoring by common factor and grouping.
The last step also includes a difference of squares!
For homework please finish up the Polynomials Review handout as well as the first question in the Types of Factoring handout.

We will continue with the rest of the Factoring Review handout tomorrow.
