Sept. 6 Class

Learning Goals:

  • Review different methods of factoring.
  • Review how to solve equations.
Today I did more reviews of how to factor:

Decomposition
I worked out two examples of this method.  It takes many steps but always works!

Criss Cross Method
Very fast if you get the numbers right, but might take a couple of tries if the first factors you choose don't work.

Perfect Square Trinomial  A² ± 2AB + B² = (A ± B)²
This is a shortcut if you can recognize the pattern.  Otherwise, either of the above two methods still works on these kind of problems.

Difference of Squares  A² – B² = (A + B)(A – B)
If you see this pattern it's a one step problem!

Next we reviewed how to solve equations.  I show more steps than are necessary just to be clear:

Quadratic equations can be solved by factoring or by using the quadratic formula.

For homework please complete the Solving Equations handout (both sides!) as well as the Factoring Handout (Part A: Factoring).
